The good thing too, is that they are quite long already... Boris has super long eyelashes, in the summer, too and he has never had an an eye infection (flies are the main problem).

Incidentally, another wonderful reindeer adaptation... despite having their longest/thickest coats in the winter, they have no eyelashes at all but with their short summer coats they grow the eyelashes...
Boris' at his best (he has my best set so far)- boy, girls wouldn't we kill for those eyelashes.....

and by comparison Boris' lack of eyelashes in his winter coat...

    8) Hi Karen! Funny you mentioning that Hector and the two girls are not related...I was thinking after Lexi was born, and how beautiful she is - that she and Hector (and Freya) would be great to start a whole new line of near-white/light reindeer!:inlove: "Snowdeer"!:inlove::D
    Do you think you might??:music:

Lily, still undecided. For two reasons, I want to see how he behaves this rut and secondly I will miss being able to take him on visits as he is bomb proof.
I do like the idea of "near" white reindeer as the whites do look stunning but I want to avoid true albinos as they can suffer serious health issues. The native Sami people do like to keep 1 true albino in there herds as their legends say that the white reindeer was the creator of the world.... I love this so am sharing...
    "
In the beginning there was a White Reindeer…
From this white reindeer, the world was created.
His bones were the foundation & his flesh the land. His veins and tendons were the rivers and his white coat the mountains, meadows and endless forests. His head the firmament. His shining eyes became the stars in the sky, however his heart was deeply sunk into the earth.
Since the beginning, life continues and the world continues to turn with millions of invisible threads – the pressure on the earth and all life the White Reindeer will collect and hold together.
If you listen closely, the heartbeat of the White Reindeer is still audible…."

    (Mythology of the Sami)
A true albino, eyes are pale too must be camera angle on this pic..

It is a nice picture but the reindeer you have pictured has blue eyes and some pigment. It is like a grey and white pinto horse where the lack of pigment covers a large area. If you shaved the flank, you would find dark skin. True albinos have red eyes and no skin pigment at all.

Noelle - That Is a true albino but I believe possibly a White Tail definitely not a reindeer ;)

I just did a quick search on WWW for white reindeer... I have friend that had 2 true albino reindeer but both died so haven't got their photos.. that little guy is a true albino but not a reindeer :)

Yes, I just wanted to show the red eyes and no pigment. It is a picture I pulled from the internet. At least I got one in the deer family, lol! :p

Genetics/albinism/white/lethal white in horses - big subject. My horses were grey or grey/white pinto but people called them "white" because they were uninformed. All were born a solid or part solid and "whitened up" with age. There are true white horses with blue eyes, albino horses with red eyes (not common), grey horses with brown eyes, pinto grey/white with brown/blue eyes depending on where the pigment in the skin appears. The big problem is there is also a lethal white that does not survive because it doesn't have the ability to absorb/utilize nutrients in the gut. I think it is a problem with enzymes but don't remember exactly. The lack of pigment in these foals is just an indicator of the internal problem and these foals do not survive. Most albinos in the wild do not survive because they are either too easy to spot by predators, have skin problems or are alienated by their own kind. Not always, but often.

Just an empty bucket can keep reindeer babies entertained for hours.... This one of Loki and Lexi but I had 4 different videos of the same bucket and different combinations of play.

It's time for the Jolley Mega ball, hubby has pumped it up this evening but it maybe too big and scary for them yet - Boris jumped on it immediately.

We'll see how the babies get on tomorrow...

Not useful at all, just an expensive horse toy that the bigger ones loved but punctured, not with antlers but pounded it into thorn bushes
:( This was last August, I think.. Boris/Lotte foreground - Hector other side of fence... can't remember why they were in different paddocks now... but there must have been a reason??? :)

Hector only had spike antlers last year. Those on the other side of the fence look more mature???? (Forgive my ignorance.)

Oh Noelle.... Ohhh you are SO right, that's Katya other side of fence, not Hector!!! Oh naughty reindeer mother... that makes so much more sense... must have separated for the start of rut..
Can't believe I mixed up Hector and his Mother.. but Hector now has those antlers... :( maybe my excuse) :( Sorry... Noelle you get the Gold Star this week!!!

I guess I should have put quotes around my statement. I was imagining what the baby reindeer were thinking. :p

I was out last night at the farm house where we keep my grandsons horse. A mother Whitetail deer and her twins where in the pasture with the horses. I just sat back and watched them running and playing with each other....couldn't help but think of your little ones. :)
